What Is a Discount Calculator?

A Discount Calculator is an online tool that helps calculate the price of an item after applying a percentage discount. It can also show how much money you save and, when needed, calculate an additional discount and tax.

How to Calculate a Discount

To calculate a discount amount, multiply the original price by the discount percentage and divide by 100.

Discount Amount = Original Price × Discount % ÷ 100

Then subtract the discount amount from the original price:

Discounted Price = Original Price − Discount Amount

How to Use the Discount Calculator

  1. Enter the original price.
  2. Enter the first discount percentage.
  3. Optionally enter an additional discount.
  4. Enter tax after discount if applicable.
  5. Select your preferred currency.
  6. Click Calculate Discount.
  7. Review the final price, savings, tax and effective discount.

Discount Calculation Example

If an item costs $100 and has a 20% discount, the discount amount is $20 and the price after the first discount is $80.

If a further 10% discount is applied to the already discounted $80, the price before tax becomes $72. This is a successive discount, so the percentages are applied one after another rather than simply added together.

How Additional Discounts Work

The Additional Discount field is applied to the price after the first discount. For example, a 20% discount followed by a 10% discount produces an overall effective discount of 28%, not 30%.

Adding Tax After a Discount

If tax applies after the discounts, enter the tax percentage in the Tax After Discount field. The calculator first applies the discounts, then calculates the tax on the discounted price.

Supported Currencies

The calculator can display results using USD, IDR, EUR, GBP and JPY formatting. Currency selection changes the display format; it does not perform currency exchange or convert one currency into another.
